So ironically, if you want 4*s and whatnot, it's all the more important to roster 2*s. At most, you'd want to keep 13 of the 14 2* heroes permanently rostered for champion rewards because the 14th 2*, bagman, is not attained from recruit tokens and therefore is much slower to build champion levels and rewards for.

Turns out that I really enjoy having a mindless game in one window while I Netflix in the other window. In reality, you only need to keep one of them at max level (common suggestions are Juggernaut, Iron Man or Spiderman). Just raw points.If you have only three 2 stars it will be better to sell that 3 star cover instead of freeing some space for it by selling one of those three 2 star heroes.

And again, real talk again, if you are screwing yourself out of HP by not rostering the non-Bagman 2*s, that's bad news.

But even then, even lower tier, like Colossus, Gamora, Spider Man, Quicksilver, etc., call all be a serious pain in the butt and wreck a top tier team, so I'd say that overall the balance is pretty good.
I think that spending money to speed up progression is a form of cheating, so I would never do it in any game.

You'd have to experiment to figure out the exact time window you need to reach your peak within the cheap shield timeframe, but this strategy got me consistent top-10 placements with a truly awful roster. You often need Essential characters to get scores high enough to win the Essential character cover being offered as the ultimate reward, so people who missed out last round will generally miss out this round too while people who won last round will get an extra stripe for their rare character. In case you need to toss some of the 3*, I would sell 3* Iron man, Beast, Octopus, those are maybe the worst of the 3* characters.Vision - :blueflag:
